Football career

Carmelo graduated from hometown UD Las Palmas' youth ranks. In his first main squad appearance, in 2001–02's first division, on 26 August 2001, he scored in a 3–0 win at RCD Mallorca, and would play a further three seasons in the second and third levels.

Carmelo joined Levante UD in 2005–06, where he would be a key figure in the Valencian Community side's promotion to the first division, but would only appear in six matches in the following season, finishing it with Hércules CF.

In 2007–08, Carmelo moved to CD Numancia, scoring seven goals (third-best in squad) en route to another top flight promotion. He then switched, in the next season, to another promotee, Sporting de Gijón, scoring in back-to-back wins in October, against Mallorca, CA Osasuna and Deportivo de La Coruña,[1][2][3] as the Asturians retained their division status.

In the following two seasons, Carmelo struggled with injury, but managed to be relatively used by Sporting, not being able to find the net in 45 league games (both seasons combined) however.
